G.-Z.’s Rogerian Template in 6 Parts/English 101 (Revised Spring 2022)
1) Introduce the issue neutrally from the perspective of Both or All Sides!
You will still have a hook for this kind of writing, but Rogerian introductions differ from regular argumentative introductions
because they exist in neutral territory. Present one side first and then the other side, making sure not to favor one side. Give
both sides equal time, attention, and writing detail. The thesis is at the end of the Rogerian introduction, but it does not
sound one-sided. Instead, it sounds akin to this: “Both sides have an interest in _______________________.”
2) Share your side and be persuasive that your side is right!
Write this like a normal argument from your chosen perspective or opinion. Convince your reader that your perspective
makes the most sense and offers the best long-ranging outcome. If you wish to provide evidence or series of reasons, this is
the ideal time since this is the only moment in the whole essay where your side is presented with this kind of strength and
attention.
3) Criticize and attack your side and what you shared in Paragraph 2! Attack or criticize what you wrote in paragraph 2!
This may feel like a strange process, but this is part of what makes the Rogerian form so unique. If you shared a series of
reasons, then you could write paragraph 3 by attacking each of those reasons. Pretend you are a defense attorney tearing up
whatever was set forth immediately prior by you…in paragraph 2.
4) Fight for your opponent! Argue for your opponent!
It is best if you come up with one major reason for why your opponent has a better idea and stance than you. Then, spend
the whole passage persuading your reader that your opponent’s position makes sense and is worth examining. You should
have the same kind of force of persuasion in this passage as when you argued for your side in paragraph 2…even though you
are arguing here for the opposite of your own position!
5) Find the Weakness in your Opponent’s position from the prior section, paragraph 4.
There is a rhythm to what is happening in this essay. You first set forth your own position and then attacked that position.
Then, you adopted your opponent’s position. Now, in this section, give yourself permission to attack your opponent or at
least, defend your position again. Finish what you started in paragraph 2. Your opponent’s thinking has flaws for you to find!
6) Create a compromise that works in real life with real young people!
Operate from a genuine place of compromise and mutuality! You have occupied both sides of the issue and have a better
intellectual and academic understanding of why each side feels so strongly. With this in mind, detail a proposed solution or
several mini-solutions that actually can be used at a school site, at a library, or out in the world of entertainment media. This
is a moment of real-life, practical action that is meant to show that all this high-level thinking leads to real-world application
and real-world outcomes for young people, who are worthy of our time, attention, and efforts! What can government,
schools, community members, parents, mental health professionals, and teens do to solve this controversy?
Students,
Please do number or separate the 6 needed sections of your “skeleton” assignment. If you submit something close to a paragraph or block of text, I cannot apprehend what the separate sections are that you plan to write. Use my example and provide 6 separate moments that I can then comment on. Otherwise, I might not be able to comment or score at this stage even though the drafts are due next week.
Thanks for your attention. I have commented for a few early submissions in case the submission needs to be re-done, so check on that, as needed.
