There are three ways to change a health behavior. For some behaviors, people are just lacking knowledge; for other behaviors, the easiest thing is to change the law. But in most cases, these approaches aren’t enough. What you must usually do is change attitudes—help people change their motivations. What you learned about the Science of Public Health will help you do this. You will learn how to use reliable data to identify health problems in a community, defend which problems should receive priority focus, and plan ways to motivate individuals to change their behavior. These skills are applicable in any community, whether it be a city, a hospital, a school or a business.
DIRECTIONS:
First—locate the following slides (or worksheets) from SUBJECT 2 to refer to while working on this assignment: A) the Decision Making questions, B) the Framework for Intervention Options, and C) the Types of Regulation in the Self Determination Model
Second—now, you need to get some valid data.
Go to the County Health Rankings website at this page: http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/app/texas/2019/compare/snapshot. It should say Texas, 2019 and you should be in the Compare Counties tab.
Select any county of your choice to do this assignment (you will use the same county in a later assignment)
Once your county opens, scroll down to the section titled: Health Behaviors and click on the “+” sign next to the words that read Additional Health Behaviors to see all the behaviors (include a screen shot of this page in your assignment).
The far left column shows rates in your county and the far right column shows the average for the entire state. Make a list of all the behaviors where the rates in your county are worse than the state average (also pay attention to any that have red graphs because these are behaviors that are getting worse in your county)
Third—next, you need to decide on which of these behaviors you should focus. This is where the Decision-Making questions are used.
Use this list of questions to decide which behavior to pick. Check (or highlight) the decision-making reason(s) that most influenced your choice—as many as applicable in each category (include table in your assignment).
In a few sentences, say which behavior you selected and which of these decision-making reasons were most important to your decision and why.
About Behavior
q Most likely to get worse
q Effects the most people
q Will see effect soonest
Most debilitating
Will get the most support
About Possible Solutions
q Help the most at risk
q Easiest to fix
q Have broadest impact
Fourth—now you have selected your focus behavior, you need to decide what is the best way to intervene. This is where the Framework for Intervention Optionswill be used.
The “How” is already selected for you, but you must select one intervention style for each of the other two questions:
In a few sentences, explain your reasons for choosing the Who and When you chose.
Who?
q General Population
q Most at Risk
Specific individuals with problem
Tertiary (to slow damage after diagnosis)
Obligation (fees and force)
When?
q Primary (before exposure)
q Secondary (after exposure, but not diseased)
How?
q Education/Information
ü Motivation (changing attitudes)
Fifth—the last part is for you to explain ideas for how you will change motivations so that the people on whom you are focusing will improve their behaviors. The table below shows the Levels of Regulation from the Self Determination Theory. For each level, give at least one idea for what you could do as a professional to help motivate people to improve their behavior (don’t just talk about what you hope they feel). [Expand table as needed)
Extrinsic-type Regulation
Intrinsic-like Regulation
External
Introjected
Identified (Relatedness)
Integrated
Autonomy
Competence
(punishment or reward)
(guilt or embarrassment)
(peer pressure or belonging)
(useful life goal)
(protecting will power/ free choice)
(personal learning / growth)
