After you complete the second belief profile (the “post-profile”), you will write an approximately 3 page analysis and reflection paper. (The paper should be no less than two pages in length, as you will need this amount of space to truly analyze and reflect, but it should be succinct enough to be no more than three-and-a-half or four pages.)
In this paper, the goal is for you to associate your pre- and post- responses and analyze the differences and similarities between the two. In the paper, you will discuss how your own pre- and post-literacy beliefs have changed, how your beliefs have stayed the same, and to the extent those beliefs have changed and stayed the same from the beginning of the course to the end of the course. You do not have to discuss all the statements in your paper, of course, but you do want to pick a number to focus upon so that you have specific examples and are detailed in your write-up.
At the end of the paper, you will reflect. Think about what you learned from this assignment, what you learned about yourself, what you learned about your teaching, and what you may need to continue learning as you progress in your career in education. The reflective piece must be at least two paragraphs of the total paper, and the reflection will come after the analysis portion of the paper.
Here are some questions/topics to help guide you as you work on your paper. Please note that you will not address all of these, but these may help as you put your thoughts together, and these suggested topics can be used for both the analysis and the reflection.
Guiding Questions/Topics/Thoughts:
• Describe your pre-profile. Did you find that you had a large number of one specific Likert-scale response or a couple of responses? For example, did you find that you often picked “strongly agree”? Or “agree”? Or perhaps “strongly disagree”? (Etc.) Or did you have a mixture of various responses? Did you find that you had more (or less) specific responses than you did on the post-profile?

• Did you select “unsure” on any statements of your pre-profile? Did you select “unsure” on any statements of your post-profile? Can you see a patterns in the types of statements that you marked as “unsure”? Why do you think this is?
• Did anything surprise you about your responses? If so, what?
• Did you feel more comfortable responding to certain statements or particular types of statements? Do you think you felt more comfortable responding to statements that were more developmental in nature, culturally-based in nature, socially-based in nature, etc.? Why do you think that was the case?
• Did you feel less comfortable responding to certain statements or particular types of statements? Do you think you felt less comfortable responding to statements that were more developmental in nature, culturally-based in nature, socially-based in nature, etc.? What do you think that was the case?
• How do you think your role as an educator helped you as you responded to the statements? Did you think of particular students or parents as you were responding to these? (If you are beginning your first year of teaching in the fall, or if you are still a novice teacher, you may also think about previous field placement/student teaching experiences.)
• Do you think that the number of years you have been a teacher had any bearing on your pre- and post-literacy responses? Why or why not?
• How did your background knowledge of literacy help you as you responded to the profiles? How did new information learned help you as you responded to the profiles?
• As you compare both your pre-profile and post-profile, think about how educators must constantly learn new information, develop new skills, and recognize areas in which they need to grow. How did this assignment “open your eyes” to what you know and what you need/want to know more about?
• How can your profile responses (and perhaps the changes made in your profile responses) help define you as an educator?
• How might your beliefs about literacy positively impact your students? How might your beliefs about literacy negatively impact your students?
• After thinking about your pre- and post-literacy belief statements, what changes might you make in your literacy instruction?
