You will be required to answer one of the following essays in class. You will write your essay as a well-developed six paragraph essay, relying upon historical evidence to make an argument about the past.
In addition to the long essay, you will respond to a primary source reading with several short-answer questions.
ESSAY 1:
The first half of the U.S. survey course culminates at the midterm with the American Revolution. In many ways, the American Revolution represented something unique in the world at the time and was based on ideas about individual liberties (what we would call rights in a legal sense) that had evolved and developed over a long historical timeline. Draft an essay that outlines the historical trajectory of individual rights as they existed in England and her colonies. How did conceptions of individual rights change over time? How did ideas about the source of rights evolve in the centuries before the American Revolution? How did revolutionary documents, like the Declaration of Independence, frame individual rights as the foundation of the new government? How did revolutionary leaders reframe individual rights in their effort to build support for the war? Finally, discuss the limits of individual rights, what elements of American society were traditionally excluded from individual rights enshrined in British and later American laws? How were limitations on individual liberty enshrined in American law after independence was achieved.
Rough Outline
Paragraph 1:
Outline the history of the “Rights of Englishman”. Pay special attention to how those rights were formalized in written law and the conflicts within English society that led to their expansion.
Paragraph 2:
Describe the idea of individual liberties were applied to the English colonies, especially in the 18th century and decades leading up to the American Revolution. What types of legislation was passed by parliament that governed the colonies and did those laws respect traditional English liberties? A good idea would be to consider religious liberty, and what that meant (or didn’t), in the New England colonies. How did religious liberty in New England change over time?
Paragraph 3:
How did legislation affecting the colonies after the French and Indian War change? Who was affected by those changes? Why did this legislation lead many colonists to conclude that their traditional rights were being impinged upon?
Paragraph 4:
How did revolutionary era documents like the Declaration of Independence and Thomas Payne’s Common Sense frame individual rights? What kind of rights were specifically enumerated and why? What was the source of those rights and liberties? Why and how was this change significant?
Paragraph 5:
Throughout the colonial period, what segments of the population lacked individual liberty and individual rights? Why? Consider here not only political rights, but also liberty of conscience.
Paragraph 6:
In the last paragraph describe how the frame of government after 1788 (the Constitution) balanced the preservation of individual liberties, with strategies to limit the political power of popular majorities.
Essay 2:
Two very colonial distinct societies emerged on North America’s east coast in the 17th century. In this essay, you will compare the societies that emerged in New England (Massachusetts, Plymouth, Rhode Island, Connecticut) and the Chesapeake (Virginia, and Maryland). Specifically, you will compare how the motivation for the colonial venture shaped the trajectory of the society that developed between founding and the French and Indian War. Conclude with an argument on whether these two British Colonies were fundamentally similar, or fundamentally different.
Rough Outline
Paragraph 1:
Discuss the purpose for the founding of the Virginia colony and outline its early history.
Paragraph 2:
What did the Chesapeake society that emerged in the 17th century and matured in the 18th century look like? How did it function? Importantly, how did the colony’s founding goals and economy shape the social trajectory of the region?
Paragraph 3:
Discuss the purpose and founding of the New England Colonies and outline their early history.
Paragraph 4:
What did the New England society that emerged in the 17th century and matured in the 18th century look like? How did it function? Importantly, how did the colony’s founding goals and economy shape the social trajectory of the region?
Paragraph 5:
Up to this point, you have been assembly historical evidence to draft a historical essay. Now, you must make an argument. In paragraph five, discuss what difference between the two colonial regions at their founding is best able to explain their divergent paths.
Paragraph 6:
Again, use your evidence to make an argument. Were these two colonial regions fundamentally similar, or fundamentally different at the conclusion of the French and Indian War and on the verge of the American Independence movement?
I need 3-5 evidence on each paragraph and yes I need both essays done because I’m not sure witch one he will ask so 3-5 evidence on each paragraph (you can do 3) because I am going to have to memorize both these essays and I need sentences to paraphrase what the evidence was just saying so basically 6 sentences each paragraph. For example on paragraph one, essay one include the evidence/quote “The rights of Englishmen are derived from God, not from king or Parliament, and would be secured by the study of history, law, and tradition. -John Adams I don’t want a lot so like I said I have to memorize it but definitely 3 evidences and whatever the paragraph is asking.
