Emotional suppression involves denying any outward signs of how we feel on the inside (Cullen, 2016). Many professionals such as doctors or police officers to name a few, often have to “suppress” signs of emotions in order to fulfill their duties and not appear emotional (Cullen, 2016). Despite the perceived usefulness of suppression, studies have found that suppressing emotions can have far-reaching implications on our overall health and well-being(Cullen, 2016). It has been noted that most people respond to emotions by either acting out or suppressing their emotions(Cullen, 2016). Our actions can cause similar reactions which can trigger further turmoil for us (Cullen, 2016). If we suppress feelings we should not be surprised by a negative outcome. If we learn to regulate emotions and act in a manner that is deemed socially acceptable we mitigate damage(Cullen, 2016.)
One way to regulate emotions is by not denying our emotions and acknowledging them (Cullen, 2016). The beauty of emotions is that they vary in intensity and magnitude and they eventually dissipate(Cullen, 2016). Mindfulness-based interventions such as Mindfulness-Based Emotional Balance (MBEB) can be useful according to research (Cullen, 2016).

Suppressing emotions, or just trying to push emotional thoughts and feelings out of your mind, is an emotion regulation strategy many people use. When used from time to time, emotional suppression may not have dramatic negative consequences. Who can share an experience when they have used emotion suppression?

Hearing the story of Genie was very difficult and heartbreaking, especially as the narrator pointed out that she was most likely average until the abuse from her father. Genie was tied to a chair or a crib for most of her life, resulting in a lack of development in her motor skills. She could not interact or communicate with others, resulting in an inability to talk or have social skills that are usually learned at a young age by others. She was neglected and placed in a dark room, which resulted in deficits in all areas of her development. When she was found and brought to the hospital at 13, she had the cognitive ability of a 13 month old (The Back of the Archive, 2020). However, with intervention from a team of specialists, Genie showed remarkable improvement for a while. I think that, in many areas, the research team did many things correctly. They worked to establish social bonds and develop her language and motor skills. It sounded as though the research team was patient with her, and she wasn’t put in a rigorous program that caused stressed. She had started to pick up language and became more affectionate with the researchers. When she was initially placed in homes, it was with someone who knew her and had an established bond with her already. However, I think the lack of a stable home hindered her ability to reach her full potential, especially when her mother obtained custody of her and then placed her in other foster homes. If I had been a part of the team, I would have looked in to ways to transfer custody from the mother to the family Genie had been staying with and showing a lot of progress with. I’m also not sure if the relationship between Genie and her mother should have been encouraged, as her mother was a part of the abuse and neglect that Genie suffered, and her mother brought Genie back to the family home, which could be considered a traumatic place for Genie to have returned to. Perhaps this was researched and not included in the video.
