1. Critically reflect on what may pressure a legislator to compromise ethical standards
during the lawmaking process?
a. Discuss 2 ethical practices using examples of specific laws at either the local, state, or
federal level to provide support for your answer.
b. Discuss 2 unethical practices using examples of specific laws at either the local, state,
or federal level to provide support for your answer.
c. Provide a plan based on readings as to how a legislator may make an ethical decision
when working on a controversial law.
2. Critically reflect on specific concepts related to ethics in policymaking by completing the
following:
a. Describe briefly each of the following terms related to ethics in policy making:
Conflict of Interest, Transparency, & Fairness
b. Describe actual cases where each of the above terms were apparent.
c. Discuss one watchdog that may help to keep lawmaking ethical when conflict arises.
3. Compare the (a) ANA Nurses Code of Ethics to the Code of Ethics for Government
Service and the (b) Nightingale Pledge to the Oath of Office for Elected Officials (link in
Professor’s Notes).
a. Compare the ANA Code of Ethics to the Code of Ethics for Government
Service Employees. Discuss similarities and differences.
b. Compare the Nightingale Pledge to the Oath of Office for Elected Officials
(link in Professor’s notes). Compare similarities and differences.
c. Critically analyze why the Gallop Poll ratings for trustworthiness/honesty are
so high for nurses and so low for policy makers.
