Composition I
Essay 1: The Interview Narrative
Job interviewers often ask questions that require narrative answers. For your first essay in
Composition I, choose one of the following common interview questions, and write a 3-5-page
narrative essay that answers the question. Here are some choices from Monster.com.
1) What was the last project you led, and what was its outcome?
2) Give me an example of a time that you felt you went above and beyond the call of duty at
work.
3) Can you describe a time when your work was criticized?
4) Have you ever been on a team where someone was not pulling their own weight? How
did you handle it?
5) Tell me about a time when you had to give someone difficult feedback. How did you
handle it?
6) What is your greatest failure, and what did you learn from it?
7) What’s the most difficult decision you’ve made in the last two years and how did you
come to that decision?
8) Tell me about your proudest achievement.
9) Who has impacted you most in your career and how?
10) What’s the most important thing you learned in school?
11) Why did you choose your major?
12) What is your greatest achievement outside of work
13) What is your favorite memory from childhood?
Even though some of these prompts can be answered very briefly, think of a specific
story from your life to tell in response. Choose only one of the questions. There is no need to ask
the question in your paper, but you might restate it as part of your thesis statement.
When you write this paper, follow the guidelines for telling a good story. Chapter 10 of
The Norton Field Guide offers suggestions for organizing a narrative. Do include sufficient
information about your characters and setting. The story should have a conflict that gets
resolved. You should also include dialogue and sensory details. In the end, make sure the
audience understands the significance of the story.
