ASSIGNMENT SHEET: PAPER ONE
DIRECTIONS: You are to write an argumentative essay with a minimum of 4 FULL pages. When you write an argumentative essay, you take a stand on a debatable issue; at the heart of every argument is a claim or thesis with which people may reasonably disagree. You are not to assume that your audience already agrees with you; instead, you are to expect the reader to be skeptical of your point of view. Your goal is to try to convince the reader to change his/her mind on the given topic. There is no need to do any outside research: no Internet or Google. You are to focus on textual support (specific passages, speeches, character motivations, character interaction with others, etc.) to make your argument. Textual support requires literary analysis.“To analyze” is to explain in a step-by-step process what something means. By a close and careful examination, you will break down a complex set of ideas to discover its inner workings, underpinnings, and relationships to other ideas. You must be reflective, deep, and articulate. I am demanding thoughtfulness and expression.
TASK: You are to choose ONE of the war quotes from the Fall 2022War Quotes Exercise document from the 06 September and 08September classes (In-Class Writing Exercise: War Quotes Exercise document) and apply its meaning and significance to ONE of the following course texts: Goya’s Disasters of War;Myrtiotissa, “Women of Suli,” any poem from the World War I poetry handout, or Irene Gut, In My Hands. You are using your chosen quotation to shed light upon and gain further insight into your chosen text.
First, you must clarify the ideas and concerns about war that are raised in your chosen quotation. I expect a thorough explication of it. Second, you must connect those explicated ideas to your chosen text. I expect 2-3 examples from your chosen text. You will use your analyzed quotation to make an argument about the larger issues of war that are found in your chosen text. As part of your answer, you should consider the following: How do the two pieces interact with one another? Are they in agreement with each other, or do they clash with each other? Is there a conflict of values between the times they were written? Are there gender, moral, social, or political considerations that should be addressed in both pieces? You are not limited to these suggestions.
ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE: Your essay must be stapled, typed, and double-space. You must use 12 points, Times New Roman font. There is no page length limit. If you do not meet minimum length requirement, I will ask you to resubmit the assignment. You must use MLA formatting: one inch margins all around, complete works cited page, the use of parenthetical citations. You must have a cover page. On the upper left-hand corner, you are to list your name, course information, and a title for your paper. This cover page is not to be considered as page one. Page one begins with your written work. You must begin at the very top of page. Points will be deducted if you do not follow these directions. You will submit your PAPER ONE on the date indicated on the course syllabus.
I chose number 4 of the war quotes And then I have to compare it to the women of suli poem.My argument is that the hero in war is not always the stereotype of the man holding a gun on the battle field, there are other hero’s affected by war than the one that did a courageous act
